Abstract

The formation of compositional thinking in the system of contemporary art education acts as an integrative cognitive process in which the analytical mastery of the structural patterns of artworks is organically intertwined with productive creative activity. This contributes to the transition from fragmented technical skills to a holistic intellectual strategy that ensures the independent generation of non-standard compositional solutions within an expanding professional field. Traditional academic approaches, oriented primarily toward sequential copying and the accumulation of formal techniques of rhythm, proportion, balance, and contrast, demonstrate limitations in developing the deeper mechanisms of visual perception, figurative modeling, and reflexive comprehension. This leads to a gap between theoretical conceptions of the nature of this phenomenon and actual pedagogical practices. Innovative methodological models involving the parallel deployment of operations of decomposition, structuring, identification of dominants, and their immediate transfer into students’ own creative tasks through techniques of analytical reconstruction and compositional protocoling create conditions for the emergence of synergistic effects. In these effects, the development of the analytical component accelerates the synthetic and reflexive components, transforming compositional thinking into a unified functional system. The results of comparative analysis obtained through long-term observation of students in design, painting, and decorative and applied arts indicate the statistically significant superiority of the integrative approach: the growth in the integral indicator in the experimental sample more than 2.5 times exceeded the corresponding indicator for traditional instruction, with particularly pronounced dynamics in the reflexive component (ratio of increments 3.28:1). This reflects the formation of abilities in verbalization, critical substantiation, and mutual review of compositional solutions. The qualitative characteristics of final works demonstrate a substantial increase in the integrity, originality, and validity of artistic decisions, which is especially evident in the reduced proportion of stereotypical compositions and the enhanced autonomy of cognitive strategies applicable beyond specific educational models. Differentiation by specialization confirms the universality of the model, in which variations in the rates of development of individual components correspond to professional specificities without diminishing overall effectiveness. Thus, the synthesis of artistic analysis and practice-oriented learning discloses the mechanisms of a qualitative leap in the development of compositional thinking as an integrative personality trait. It opens prospects for rethinking pedagogical paradigms in art education and supplies grounds for evaluating the relevance of these approaches in the context of the digital transformation of visual practices.
