Abstract

The article is devoted to the quantitative assessment of the impact of additive manufacturing technologies and flexible automation on reducing time-to-market and transforming global industrial geography in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The aim of the study is to demonstrate how the transition from centralized mass production to distributed flexible models changes cost structure, risk profile, and spatial allocation of production capacities. The empirical base consists of data from 458 manufacturing companies in 24 countries for the period 2018–2023, including financial statements, information on the implementation of additive technologies and robotic systems, geography of production facilities, product life cycle indicators, as well as macroeconomic and patent databases from UNCTAD, the World Bank, and WIPO. The methodology is based on panel regression with fixed effects, comparative analysis of product life cycles, production localization index, cluster analysis by the level of Industry 4.0 technology adoption, and statistical significance tests. It is shown that the transition to full-cycle additive manufacturing reduces average time-to-market by more than 76%, initial capital expenditures by approximately 70%, and the break-even point more than eightfold, while simultaneously increasing variable costs per unit of output, making small-scale production and customization economically viable and shifting the focus from economies of scale to economies of scope. It is established that North America and the EU demonstrate the highest growth in value added, which is interpreted as a manifestation of reshoring and a shift of industrial growth centers to regions with a high concentration of R&D and solvent demand. The analysis of financial ratios shows a nearly twofold reduction in the operating cycle, a decrease in the share of inventories in assets, increased liquidity, and reduced debt burden, which enhances the investment attractiveness of companies implementing flexible automation. The risks of technological dependence on proprietary materials and software, as well as the growth of regulatory and tax requirements when relocating production to developed jurisdictions, are discussed; it is concluded that additive technologies and flexible automation form a new model of globalization based on time and technological flexibility arbitrage rather than cheap labor.
