Architectural and planning models of housing for older adults in Russia: a matrix for selecting the optimal living scenario and the integration of care services

Abstract

Unfortunately, after the collapse of the USSR, the issue of housing for the elderly was ignored. This was probably due to the emergence of other pressing problems in an unstable economy. In Soviet times, this topic received increased attention from the 1960s to the 1980s. This was caused by the housing crisis and the growing number of elderly people who lost loved ones during the Great Patriotic War, leaving them alone. Unfortunately, the buildings built in this era are outdated both in terms of their structural integrity and in terms of suitability for modern life. As modern society develops, older people make up a significant part of the Russian population, and experts predict that this number will continue to grow. Unfortunately, in modern Russian society, especially within individual households, the role of the elderly as a wise guiding force uniting entire families has been lost. This disconnection has led to a feeling of isolation from the mainstream of everyday life. Unfortunately, this group of people is the most vulnerable and least protected by the State.
