Impact of the Russian system of music education on music education in China

Abstract

The scholarly article offers a comprehensive analysis of the transnational transfer of pedagogical models in music education, in which the Russian system serves as a key factor in the formation and evolution of professional musician training in China across more than seven decades. The study discloses the mechanisms of adaptation of the three-tier organizational structure, encompassing elementary, secondary specialized, and higher levels, which was adopted in the mid-twentieth century and continues to hold defining importance in the architecture of Chinese conservatories. This structure determines the sequential development of competencies ranging from foundational technical preparation to specialized performance and musicological expertise. Particular attention is devoted to the substantive content of curricula, wherein disciplines rooted in the traditions of the Moscow and Leningrad schools – such as solfeggio based on relative and absolute systems, harmony according to the Sposobin-Dubovsky methodology, polyphony following Skrebkov, formal analysis per Mazel and Tsukkerman, along with individualized techniques of instrumental and vocal instruction – account for an average of 45% of the total curriculum volume, reaching 57% within the theoretical component, with notable regional differentiation: the highest indicators characterize northeastern institutions historically linked to the Russian cultural milieu (Harbin Conservatory – 56%), whereas southern institutions exhibit lesser dependence (Xinghai Conservatory – 36,9%). Findings derived from content analysis of documents and standardized surveys of instructors demonstrate the persistence of Russian influence at the level of individual pedagogical practice, where the mean self-assessment of methodological element integration attains 3.44 points on a five-point scale, peaking in the organization of individual lessons (up to 4.36 for pianists) and the development of musical hearing. These results reflect the continuity of principles advanced by Neuhaus, Goldenweiser, and Ostrovsky. Dynamics of student mobility illustrate the broadening of direct transfer channels: the number of Chinese learners in leading Russian conservatories has grown nearly sixfold between 2005 and 2023, thereby facilitating the renewal of faculty resources and the integration of contemporary performance standards. Repertoire policy retains a substantial proportion of compositions by Russian and Soviet composers (20-25% in piano programs), evidencing stabilization following a period of decline and affirming their position within the global artistic canon. Generational analysis reveals differentiation in perception: among educators with over 25 years of experience, the Russian tradition remains the predominant source of professional identity (68,6%), whereas younger cohorts display diversified orientations with heightened Western European and American influences. This pattern signals the emergence of a synthetic model in which the Russian component – having progressed through phases of direct borrowing, adaptation, and partial transformation – has become integrated into the national context as an organic element. It ensures equilibrium among historical continuity, cultural distinctiveness, and globalization trends in arts education. The data presented underscore the work’s high relevance for specialists in comparative pedagogy, the history of music education, and theories of intercultural knowledge transfer. They provide a conceptual framework for evaluating the resilience of adopted educational practices in cross-cultural settings and for envisioning prospects of equitable Russo-Chinese collaboration in the future.
