The Functioning of Natural Landscapes as a Reflection of Ecological Consciousness in the novels of Jonathan Franzen and Emily St. John Mandel

Abstract

This article explores the functioning of natural landscapes as a reflection of ecological consciousness in the novels of Jonathan Franzen and Emily St. John Mandel, demonstrating that images of nature in modern literature are becoming a significant symbol of social and environmental transformations. The introduction provides a justification for the relevance of the study, which focuses on the relationship between literary images of nature and changes in public perception of environmental issues. The theoretical framework based on the ideas of ecocriticism and cultural ecology is substantiated, and the role of literary narrative in the formation of ecological consciousness is highlighted. The methods section presents a research methodology that includes a comparative analysis of the texts of the two authors. The methods of discursive analysis, semiotic interpretation and contextualization were applied, which made it possible to identify specific motifs and symbols of natural landscapes. The process of selecting representative text fragments is described in detail, which provides an objective approach to analysis and allows us to identify both explicit and hidden semantic links between the description of nature and the ideas of environmental responsibility. The results section reveals the main findings of the study: the natural landscapes in the novels of Franzen and Mandel act not only as the background of the narrative, but also as active participants in the formation of the characters' eco-awareness and reader's reaction. It is established that the dynamic image of nature reflects the modern challenges of civilization, emphasizing the instability of the environment and calling for a rethink of the relationship between man and nature. The parallels and differences between the authors' approaches allow for a deeper understanding of the specifics of the reflection of the environmental crisis in the literature. The discussion section interprets the results obtained: it analyzes how artistic images contribute to the formation of a critical attitude towards anthropocentrism, and discusses the prospects for further research in the field of ecoliterature. The result of the study is the conclusion that the literary depiction of natural landscapes is becoming an integral part of the modern dialogue on sustainable development, contributing to the formation of ecological culture and self-awareness.
